View Full Version : lower oil pressure than usual 84 svo

This is a pic of it while running. It starts running rougher when it gets low ( wanting to die at idle and hesitating a lot when you get on the gas. ) is the oil pump getting old or oil sending unit or what? Car sat for 20 years and is original. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Oil pressure is controlled by a few things. Engine speed and the pressure relief valve. Changing the oil makes a big diference too. The sending unit is pretty durable but they do go bad. Common part 69 to 88 mustang. If the idle is low and ready to stall, I would expect it to read low. My 88 5.0 was low and swapped it out with another car, it read good. Also affected by the IVR.

Try changing the sending unit, use motorcraft filter (holds more pressure) and change oil to use 10-40, Maybe some if this will help. If not your main bearings or oil pump may be worn.

The IVR is the instrument voltage regulator. Small metal case with. 9 volt battery connector located on the backside of the cluster. Other gauges with vary as well ie, fuel, temp, oil pressure. The idle should be at least 600 rpms to be normal.
